Sensor - definition

A sensor is a component of a measurement or control system designed to detect a specific physical or chemical quantity and convert it into a signal suitable for further processing. This signal may be electrical, optical, pneumatic, or digital, depending on the applied technology and the type of measured variable. Sensors play a crucial role in automation, robotics, consumer electronics, medicine, and safety systems by providing data essential for decision-making and control.

The operating principle of a sensor is based on the response of its structure or active material to environmental changes, such as temperature, pressure, motion, light intensity, the presence of chemical substances, or electromagnetic fields. This response is then converted into a measurable signal by an appropriate processing circuit. In modern systems, sensors are often integrated with signal conditioning electronics, digital interfaces, and data analysis algorithms, enhancing their precision and functionality.

In engineering, sensors represent the first stage of the measurement chain and have a direct impact on the overall accuracy and reliability of a system. Proper sensor selection depends on the required performance parameters, such as measurement range, resolution, response time, and resistance to environmental conditions. In automated systems, sensors provide real-time information about the state of a process or its surroundings, enabling dynamic adaptation of machine, device, or installation behavior.
