Probability - definition

Probability is a mathematical concept that describes the degree of certainty of the occurrence of a specific random event. In classical terms, it is defined as the number of outcomes favourable to a given event divided by the number of all possible equivalent variants. In a more general sense, probability is a function that assigns to each event of a subset of the event space a real number between 0 and 1, where 0 represents an impossible event and 1 represents a certain event.

Formal probability theory is based on Kolmogorov's axioms and is the foundation of probability calculus and statistics mathematics. Probability can be objective - derived from mathematical analysis or frequency observations of repeated experiments - or subjective, reflecting an individual's degree of belief that an event will occur under conditions of incomplete information.

In technical applications, probability plays a key role in the modelling of random processes, reliability analysis of systems, signal theory, information coding, adaptive control, artificial intelligence and forecasting of dynamic phenomena. In electronics, probabilistic approaches are used in noise modelling, transmission channel analysis and the design of signal estimation and filtering algorithms, among others.

Also associated with the concept of probability are random variables, probability distributions and density functions, which allow the quantitative description of the behaviour of systems under uncertainty. Tools enable the formulation of predictions, statistical inference and decision-making in stochastic environments.
