What is the difference between an SD card and a memory card?

An SD card is one of many types of Memory Cards. The term 'memory card' is a generic term, while 'SD card' refers to a specific technology standard. In other words: every SD card is a memory card, but not every memory card is an SD card.

What is a memory card?

The term memory card (memory card) covers all types of miniature data storage media based on flash memory technology. They are used to store digital files (such as photos, videos, documents or application data) on mobile devices, cameras, consoles or laptops. Memory Cards come in a variety of physical and technological formats, depending on the manufacturer and time of development. The most common types of Memory Cards include: SD (Secure Digital), microSD, CompactFlash (CF), Memory Stick (MS) and newer industry variants e.g. CFast or XQD. Each of these standards has its own specification, connector and method of communication with the device.

What is an SD card?

SD (Secure Digital) card is a specific family of memory cards developed by the SD Association. It was designed as a universal standard for consumer devices and has become extremely popular due to its simplicity of design, high capacity and versatility. Within the SD standard there are several generations: SD (up to 2GB, FAT16), SDHC (up to 32GB, FAT32), SDXC (up to 2TB, exFAT) and SDUC (up to 128TB). In parallel, there are miniature versions - mainly microSD, used in phones and compact cameras. Memory Cards are today the most common type of memory card used in digital photography, camcorders, consoles and recorders. As a result, the term "memory card" is sometimes colloquially equated with the SD card, although technically they are not synonymous. From the user's point of view, it is most important to distinguish between the standard (e.g. SDXC vs CFexpress), as this determines device compatibility, speed and data format.
