The joule (J) is the SI unit of energy, work, and heat, defined as the amount of energy transferred or used when a force of one newton (N) moves an object one meter in the direction of the force. The unit is named after the English physicist James Prescott Joule, who conducted pioneering research on the interconversion of mechanical and thermal energy.
In physics and engineering, the joule applies to various forms of energy, including kinetic, potential, thermal, electrical, and electromagnetic energy. It may represent the work done by a motor, the energy consumed by an electrical device, the heat released by a substance, or the energy stored in a capacitor. The joule is a derived unit and can also be expressed as a newton-meter (N·m), reflecting its relationship with the base units of mass, length, and time.
The joule is widely used in engineering calculations, energy system design, thermodynamic analysis, and efficiency measurements of devices and processes. In the context of electrical energy, one joule corresponds to the work done when a current of one ampere (A) flows through a resistance of one ohm (Ω) for one second. In practical applications, particularly in power engineering and electronics, multiples such as kilojoule (kJ) and megajoule (MJ) are commonly used to describe larger quantities of energy.
Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation.
