Hardware - definition

Hardware refers to the physical part of a computer or electronic system, encompassing all tangible components involved in the processing, storage, and transmission of data. The term applies to both internal elements—such as the processor, RAM, hard drives, and motherboard—and external devices, including monitors, keyboards, printers, and other peripherals. Unlike software, which refers to programs and instructions that control the operation of devices, hardware forms the physical infrastructure that enables their execution.

The operation of hardware is based on the principles of digital electronics, in which data is processed as binary signals. The individual components interact within the organized structure of a computer system, where each element serves a specific function—from performing arithmetic and logical operations to enabling communication with users and other devices. Hardware may be general-purpose, as in the case of personal computers, or specialized—designed for specific tasks such as industrial controllers, routers, embedded modules, or FPGA systems.

Advances in semiconductor technology and miniaturization have led to significant changes in hardware design, resulting in increased computing power, reduced energy consumption, and enhanced functionality in increasingly compact enclosures. Designing hardware requires expertise in electronic engineering, mechanics, materials science, and electromagnetic compatibility. In modern devices, hardware and software form an inseparable system in which physical resources are controlled through software to perform advanced computational, communication, and control functions.
