Data integrity is a concept in computer science and telecommunications systems that refers to the accuracy, consistency, and immutability of data during processing, transmission, and storage. Ensuring integrity means that data has not been modified, deleted, or corrupted in an unauthorized manner and remains consistent with its original state or intended logical structure. In the context of digital systems, integrity is a fundamental prerequisite for the reliability of operations where data plays a decision-making, operational, or evidential role.
Maintaining data integrity requires the implementation of error detection and correction mechanisms, version control, cryptographic safeguards, and strict access management. Examples of techniques supporting integrity include checksums, hash functions, digital signatures, and error-correcting codes. In database systems, integrity also encompasses relationships between records, consistency rules, and constraints that ensure data conforms to the adopted logical model and schema.
In data transmission environments, integrity refers to a system’s ability to detect and counteract errors caused by interference, media damage, or manipulation. In information security, the concept is closely tied to protection against unauthorized modifications; a breach of integrity can lead to loss of trust in the data, faulty operational decisions, system failures, or regulatory noncompliance. Data integrity is therefore a cornerstone of information system reliability and a critical component of risk management in digital technologies.
