LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) - definition

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is a remote sensing technology for distance measurement and spatial modeling based on the analysis of reflected laser light pulses. It operates by emitting short laser beams toward a target surface and measuring the time it takes for the pulses to return after bouncing off objects. Based on this time interval, the system calculates precise distances, generating a highly accurate three-dimensional representation of the environment.

A typical LiDAR system consists of a laser pulse emitter, a detection receiver, and synchronization and data processing units. Unlike radar technologies that use radio waves, LiDAR employs light—typically in the near-infrared spectrum—allowing for higher spatial resolution. LiDAR devices can be mounted on aerial platforms, ground vehicles, drones, or used in stationary geodetic surveys.

LiDAR technology is applied across various fields, including cartography, geoinformatics, civil engineering, archaeology, forestry, autonomous systems, safety, and the automotive industry. In automotive applications, it is a key solution for real-time environment mapping, supporting advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles. In geodesy, it enables the creation of precise digital terrain and surface models, even in hard-to-reach or forested areas.

The high measurement resolution and capability to operate under diverse environmental conditions make LiDAR a crucial tool in spatial analysis and automation of environment perception processes. Data generated by LiDAR systems is often processed using advanced algorithms, such as object recognition, segmentation, or point cloud generation, enabling integration with geographic information systems (GIS), 3D modeling, and AI-based solutions.
