Acoustics - definition of

Acoustics is the branch of physics that deals with the study of sound waves, their formation, propagation, interaction with matter and reception by the sense organs. The subject of acoustics is all phenomena connected with vibrations of particles in elastic media, such as air, water or solids, which lead to the propagation of mechanical waves in the audible frequency range, infrasound i ultrasonic.

The field of acoustics covers both theoretical, as well as practical ones. The theoretical research examines the laws governing wave propagation, their interference, diffraction and attenuation. Applied acoustics focuses on solving problems related to noise control, improvement of sound quality in architectural spaces, design of sound reinforcement systems, as well as the use of ultrasound in medicine, industry and non-destructive testing.

The structure of this field includes numerous sub-fields, such as psychoacoustics, which is concerned with human perception of sound, electroacoustics, which deals with the processing of acoustic signals by means of electronic devices, or bioacoustics, which analyses sound communication in the animal world. Environmental acoustics also plays an important role, which aims at assessing and reducing acoustic nuisance in the human environment.

The development of digital technology has made it possible to significantly improve methods of sound measurement and analysis, which finds application in sound engineering, speech synthesis, voice recognition and active noise reduction systems. Acoustics remains an interdisciplinary field, combining physics, engineering, computer science, biology and psychology to better understand and exploit sound phenomena.
