Data analysis - definition of

Data analysis is the process of systematically examining, transforming and interpreting data in order to extract useful information from them, identifying patterns, relationships and trends, and to support decision-making. It includes both qualitative, and quantitative, carried out by means of statistical, computational or visualisation methods, depending on the nature and purpose of the study.

In technical terms, data analysis involves processing sets of information from different sources - such as measurements, observations, databases or operational records - using algorithms and mathematical tools. Its purpose may be to detect anomalies, predicting future phenomena, testing of research hypotheses or optimisation of processes. Others types of analysis can be distinguished, depending on the context of application - from exploratory, diagnostic, predictive, to prescriptive.

In engineering and industrial applications, data analysis is used for.inter alia. quality monitoring, production control, plant reliability assessment and predictive maintenance. In computer science, it forms the basis of areas such as machine learning, big data, statistical analysis or data mining (data mining). Requires not only access to relevant data, but also its cleaning, standardisation and often also anonymisation.

The data analysis process is based on strict adherence to the principles of methodological correctness, so that the results are reliable and objective. Tools and analytical platforms play a key role here, to work on large data sets, visualisation of results and their reporting in a way that is understandable to the recipient.
