CNC (Computerised Numerical Control) is an advanced control technology for industrial machines and equipment, based on the use of computer systems to implement programmed sequences of movements of machining Tools. CNC systems enable precise, repeatable and automated operations in manufacturing processes such as milling, turning, drilling, laser cutting, plasma or electrical discharge machining.
At the core of the CNC system is a microprocessor-based controller that interprets the numerical code (usually in the form of G-code) and converts it into control signals for the servo drives and stepper motors, which are responsible for the movements of the machine's working axes. By closely synchronising the control with information on the position, speed and acceleration of the axes, it is possible to achieve high dimensional accuracy and surface quality.
CNC systems also integrate a range of diagnostic and safety functions, as well as communication interfaces enabling connection to CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing), MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems) and ERP systems. Modern CNC machines are often equipped with feedback sensors, tool correction systems, measurement probes and software to simulate the machining process.
CNC technology is a key pillar in the automation and digitalisation of industry, enabling unit and batch production within the Industry 4.0 model. Its applications include aerospace, automotive, medical, electronics, precision and tooling industries, where maximum repeatability, error minimisation and process flexibility are required.
