Rising time - definition

*Rise time is a term used in electronics and signal theory to describe the dynamics of signal change in response to an input spike. It represents the time it takes for a signal to grow from a specified initial value to a final value, most commonly taking the 10% and 90% amplitude levels of the final value as reference points. This parameter is particularly important in the analysis of rectangular signals, impulsive signals and in the characterisation of the time response of dynamic systems.

In practice, rise time is one of the basic indicators of the performance quality of electronic systems such as amplifiers, converters, oscillators or filters. The shorter the rise time, the faster the system's response to signal changes, which directly affects its frequency response. For linear circuits this time is inversely proportional to bandwidth - this relationship is applicable to the design of transmission and data acquisition systems, where precise signal reconstruction is important.

The phenomenon of rise time limitation results, among other things, from the properties of capacitive and Inductive Components, which do not allow for instantaneous changes in voltage or current. In digital systems, inappropriate rise time can lead to logic errors, interference or signal distortion. This timing is also analysed in the context of oscilloscope measurements, where the instrument's input bandwidth limitations can affect the observed value.
