Response time - definition

Response time is a quantity describing the delay between the moment a stimulus (input, signal, change in conditions) occurs and the response of a system or technical device. Others use the concept in a variety of fields - from Automation and electronics to computer science, optics and ergonomics. From a technical point of view, the response time informs about the efficiency of the system, its ability to track changes and the speed of the response relative to the desired control signal.

In control and control systems, the response time determines the rate at which the system reaches a state of equilibrium after a disturbance or change in the setpoint. The shorter this time, the faster the system adjusts its performance, which is important for dynamic and precise processes. In electronics, for example in sensors or optoelectronic components, response time refers to the time it takes for a signal to be recorded and transmitted for further processing.

In liquid crystal displays (LCD) or light-emitting diode (OLED) displays, the response time determines how quickly a pixel can change its state between different brightness levels. This parameter affects the sharpness of the image when displaying dynamic content, minimising the effect of ghosting. In the context of computer systems, response time can also refer to the response time of an operating system or application to a user request.

In security and Automation systems, it is important that the response time is within the limits set by standards, as exceeding it can lead to erroneous actions or dangerous situations. In high-precision and high-reliability applications, response time is one of the basic parameters for assessing system quality.
