LAN (Local Area Network) is a local Computer Networks used to exchange data between devices located in a limited area, usually within a single building, campus or group of neighbouring facilities. Its architecture enables the creation of fast and stable connections between computers, servers, printers, switches and other network components to share resources and communicate in real time.
A key feature of the LAN is its limited geographical coverage, which distinguishes it from wide-area WANs. High bandwidth and low latency are possible through the use of wired technologies such as Ethernet, or wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi. The LAN infrastructure can be based on a star, bus or ring topology, depending on the needs of the users and the physical layout of the premises and equipment. The central element managing network traffic can be a switch, hub or router.
LANs use local communication protocols, including TCP/IP, to identify and address devices. Computers on a network can be grouped into domains or work networks to help manage access to files, devices and applications. Integration with the internet is usually through a single access point, using a firewall and other security mechanisms to protect against unauthorised external access.
LANs are commonly used in office, educational, industrial and home environments. Their design and management requires knowledge of data transmission, network security and network equipment configuration. Developments in network technology now make it possible to implement LAN virtualisation functions, integrate with cloud and create complex structures with extensive traffic management and data prioritisation.
