A Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) is an integrated miniature device combining mechanical, sensory, actuator and electronic components, constructed using microfabrication technology, mainly using techniques known from semiconductor manufacturing. MEMS use physical phenomena such as electrostatics, piezoelectricity, electromagnetism or thermomechanics to convert physical and mechanical signals into pulses electrical signals and vice versa.
The structure of a typical MEMS system involves microscopic mechanical components - such as beams, diaphragms, springs, gears or Clamping Levers - interacting with electronic circuits that perform the functions of control, signal processing and communication with the environment. MEMS manufacturing is based on precision lithography, etching, thin film deposition and micro-assembly processes, enabling structures ranging in size from a few micrometres to a few millimetres to be realised.
MEMS are widely used in sensor technology (accelerometers), gyroscopes, Pressure Sensors, MEMS microphones), actuation systems (micro-pumps, micro-valves) and medicine (micro-needles, implants). Their main advantages are miniaturisation, low power consumption, high reliability and the possibility of mass production at relatively low unit costs.
In modern systems, MEMS integrate with CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) chips, creating intelligent microsystems capable of autonomous data collection, analysis and real-time action. Advanced MEMS research also includes the development of NEMS (Nano-Electro-Mechanical Systems), which push the boundaries of miniaturisation towards nanometre length scales.
Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation. The catalog includes over 1,500,000 products from 1,300 leading manufacturers. TME’s modern logistics centers in Łódź and Rzgów (Poland), with a combined area of over 40,000 m², ship nearly 6,000 packages daily to customers in more than 150 countries.
TME also invests in the development of knowledge and skills of young engineers and electronics enthusiasts through the TME Education project, and supports the tech community by organizing the TechMasterEvent series, promoting innovation and experience exchange.
