Transponder - definition

Transponder is an electronic device capable of automatically receiving an external signal and immediately generating and sending a response, according to a predefined communication protocol. It is a key component of identification, communication and navigation systems, enabling return connections to be made, often without the need for operator intervention.

From a technical point of view, a transponder combines the functions of a receiver and a transmitter, working in a specific time or frequency relationship. When an input signal is received - usually in the form of a pulse radio - it is analysed, processed and a response is transmitted, which may contain identification, location or other usage information. The response time and modulation characteristics depend on the technology used, the operating band and the type of protocol used.

Transponders are used, among others, in aviation (IFF systems - Identification Friend or Foe), transport (automatic road tolls), satellite telecommunications (amplification and retransmission of signals in orbit), RFID systems (radio frequency identification) and security systems (e.g. in car keys). Depending on the application, they can be powered by their own energy source (active transponder) or use energy from the received signal (passive transponder). They are characterised by high operational reliability, low inertia response and the ability to operate under high electromagnetic interference. The transponder design usually incorporates modulation, detection, data encryption and error correction systems to ensure its effectiveness in systems requiring high transmission accuracy and security.
