Byte (B) - definition

A byte (B) is the fundamental unit of information in computer systems, most commonly consisting of eight bits. It is used to represent data in binary form and can encode one of 256 possible combinations of binary values. In practice, a single byte can store one character in text encoding systems such as ASCII or UTF-8, including letters, digits, or symbols.

In computer architecture, the byte is the smallest addressable unit of memory, meaning that both the operating system and processor access and manipulate data in byte-sized chunks. Depending on the application, bytes may represent integers, parts of images, machine instructions, or other data structures. Their interpretation depends on the context in which they are processed by hardware and software.

The byte also serves as the basis for higher units of digital memory and data volume—such as kilobyte, megabyte, or gigabyte—which are widely used in computing, telecommunications, and digital electronics. In information systems, bytes are employed for text encoding, data transmission, memory addressing, and multimedia file processing. Their universal nature makes them an essential component of modern digital technologies.
