Cable ties (also known as zip ties) are essential components for electricians and others that work on open electrical installations. Both the construction and operating principle of cable ties are extremely simple. Using them can significantly help with organising complex installations comprised of smaller systems. Various cable ties available on the market are made of different materials and use different clamping methods. Cable ties – breakdown by material
Classic cable ties are made of various plastics that are resistant to mechanical damage and environmental conditions.
Polyamide cable ties
Many manufacturers of classic cable ties use polyamides due to their versatility and ease of processing. The useful attributes of this material, such as mechanical durability, impact resistance, and chemical agent resistance, make classic cable ties the go-to solution for many electricians and hobbyists.
We should also mention polyamide diversity. Depending on the polyamide’s type, the cable tie will be less or more resistant to abrasion and substances like acids, bases, and solvents. Simple polyamides can withstand temperatures from -40°C to 85°C, and their more durable counterparts (enriched with other substances) – from -40°C to 105°C. Steel cable ties
Cable ties made of stainless or corrosion-resistant steel are becoming more and more popular. Unlike their polyamide counterparts, steel cable ties are usually multiple use products that are suitable for especially harsh conditions. Stainless steel ensures resistance to high temperatures and mechanical loads, and also looks good in open systems due to its sheen.
Corrosion-resistant steel (usually AISI 316) is very useful in adverse environments and locations in which installations can be subjected to corrosive substances, such as production facilities and processing plants. Cable ties – breakdown by serration
Cable ties can be broken down into several categories, but the main difference is their serration – it determines each cable tie’s application and whether it is single or multiple use. Serration type also determines cable tie size.
Cable ties with inside serration
These cable ties are longer than other types and suitable for thick wires, so they can be attached to steel or aluminium suspension. Their nylon clamp is an important component – it enables quick and easy mounting and prevents cables from slipping away. Another crucial component of these cable ties are their shaped heads that ensure good adhesion to every type of surface.
Cable ties with outside serration
These cable ties are characterised by their high resistance to stretching and ease of use. This is mostly due to their head shape – all you need to do it thread the cable through the head. Due to this solution, these cable ties are small and are mostly used to organise cables in simple installations.
Non-serrated cable ties
We should also mention cable ties with hook-and-loop fasteners. These ties are multiple use, which makes them ideal for tying cables together at home – for example the cables of PCs or TVs connected to gaming consoles or sound systems.
