Cybernetics is an interdisciplinary field of science focused on the analysis and description of control systems and the flow of information in living organisms, machines, and social structures. Its primary goal is to understand the operating principles of dynamic systems that are capable of self-regulation in response to external stimuli or changing internal conditions. A core concept in cybernetics is feedback, which enables systems to adjust their behavior based on information about the outcomes of previously executed actions.
Cybernetics emerged as a distinct scientific discipline in the mid-20th century through the work of Norbert Wiener, who unified elements of mathematics, biology, automation, and information theory into a single framework. Its applications range from the study of biological and neurophysiological processes to the design of technical systems and artificial intelligence. Cybernetics provides tools for modeling complex systems where data processing, adaptation, and decision-making are essential features.
Contemporary cybernetics also encompasses research into autonomous systems, the organization of social and economic structures, and human-machine interaction. In engineering, it plays a key role in the development of intelligent control systems, robotics, industrial automation, and information technologies. By integrating knowledge across diverse disciplines, cybernetics forms a foundation for understanding and designing complex, self-regulating technical and biological systems.
