DRAM - definition

DRAM (Dynamic Random-Access Memory) is a type of volatile semiconductor memory with random access, primarily used as main memory in computers, mobile devices, and embedded systems. Each DRAM memory cell consists of a single transistor and a single capacitor, with the capacitor storing an electrical charge that represents a binary data bit. Due to the capacitor’s tendency to self-discharge over time, the stored data must be periodically refreshed—distinguishing DRAM from static memory technologies like SRAM.

The key feature of DRAM is its high memory cell density, which allows for large storage capacities at relatively low production costs. As a result, it is the most commonly used form of working memory, enabling the temporary storage of data and instructions processed by the CPU. Access time is uniform across all cells, making DRAM efficient in environments that require rapid access to large data sets.

Due to its dynamic operation, DRAM relies on external control circuitry to manage read, write, and refresh operations. Modern implementations such as SDRAM, DDR, DDR2, DDR3, and subsequent generations synchronize these operations with the system clock, increasing data throughput and allowing the memory to meet the performance demands of contemporary digital systems. Despite its volatility, DRAM remains a foundational component of computing infrastructure, offering a balanced combination of performance, capacity, and cost.
