Oscillator - definition

Oscillator is an electronic, mechanical, or physical system that generates a periodic signal—most commonly in the form of a sine, square, or triangular wave—without the need for an external input signal. The fundamental characteristic of an oscillator is its ability to sustain oscillations at a defined frequency through positive feedback and appropriate internal signal amplification. In electronics, oscillators are used to generate clock, modulation, carrier, and reference signals.

An oscillator operates by converting energy from a power supply into repetitive voltage or current variations. A key component of such a system is the resonant circuit, which determines the operating frequency—this may be an LC circuit, a quartz crystal, a ceramic resonator, or an RC network with specific dynamic properties. The stability, waveform, and frequency accuracy of the oscillations depend on the type of oscillator used and on external factors such as temperature, supply voltage, or electromagnetic interference.

Depending on the application, oscillators are classified as analog or digital, self-excited or externally triggered, and as fixed- or variable-frequency devices. In digital systems, they function as clock generators, ensuring synchronization of logic operations. In transmitters and receivers, they generate carrier waves used in radio, television, and communication signal transmission. Oscillators are also employed in measurement systems, where precise frequency control is essential for the correct operation of sensors, transducers, and analyzers.

Beyond electronics, the term oscillator also refers to mechanical and physical systems that perform oscillatory motion around an equilibrium point, such as pendulums, springs, or dynamic systems in mathematical modeling. In every case, the essential features of an oscillator are repeatability, predictability, and control over the parameters of the generated signal or motion.
