Transistor - definition

Transistor is a semiconductor electronic component used for amplifying, switching, and modulating electrical signals. Its operation is based on the controlled flow of current or charge carriers within a semiconductor material, typically made of silicon or germanium. Transistors are fundamental to modern analog and digital electronics, serving as key elements in integrated circuits, amplifiers, logic systems, and microprocessor-based systems.

There are two main categories of transistors: bipolar junction transistors (BJT), including npn and pnp types, and unipolar field-effect transistors (FET), including MOSFETs. In bipolar transistors, conduction involves the movement of both electrons and holes, while in field-effect transistors, current flows primarily through a single type of carrier and is controlled by an electric field. In both cases, a small control signal applied to one of the terminals (base or gate) regulates a much larger current flow between the other terminals (collector and emitter, or drain and source).

Functionally, a transistor operates either as a switch or an amplifier. In switching mode, it enables binary logic operations and is used to build logic gates, registers, and digital memory. In linear mode, it amplifies voltages or currents in analog devices such as audio amplifiers, signal converters, and sensors. Depending on their design, transistors can be optimized for low, medium, or high power applications and can operate across a wide frequency spectrum, from DC to radio and microwave bands.

The miniaturization of semiconductor technology has led to the widespread integration of transistors into chips, with a single integrated circuit containing billions of them. Their small size, high switching speed, and energy efficiency make them indispensable in computers, mobile systems, industrial automation, and advanced communication and energy solutions.
