Amplidine - definition

Amplidine is a type of electromechanical amplifier, used mainly in control and regulation systems, especially in the days before the development of modern electronics. It is based on the operating principle of a direct current generator with the excitation winding controlled by a low-current input signal, which allows much higher output currents to be precisely controlled.

From a technical point of view, an amplifier is a specially designed alternator with additional control and compensation windings, which converts a small input signal power into a much higher output power. In this circuit, strong magnetic coupling between the control circuits and the main output circuit plays an important role, this results in a high power amplification effect.

A characteristic feature of the amplifier is its ability to maintain stable operation under heavy loads and its resistance to interference, making it useful in Servo Motors systems, industrial automation and military fire control systems in the mid-20th century. In a typical configuration, it was used to amplify a voltage signal to control DC motors, where reliability and the ability to precisely control high power outputs were crucial.

Although amplifiers have now been almost completely replaced by solid-state amplifier circuits, their historical importance for the development of control technology and electrical power engineering remains significant. They are an example of mechanical-electrical-electrical amplification systems, which, in their time, made it possible to implement complex control functions without the use of digital electronics.
