Electric Batteries - definition

Batteries is a source of chemical energy transformed directly into electrical energy as a result of electrochemical reactions taking place inside it. It consists of one or more galvanic cells, which, connected in series or parallel, form a closed circuit capable of supplying voltage and current to an external load.

Each cell in a battery contains two electrodesan anode and a cathode, placed in an electrolyte, which allows ions to flow. The anode is the electrode that undergoes oxidation, a cathode - reduction. The movement of ions inside the electrode and the flow of electrons through an external circuit creates an electric current. Depending on the materials used and the design, batteries can offer different voltage ratings, capacity, environmental resistance and service life.

Batteries are divided into primary and secondary batteries. Batteries are primary batteries, that cannot be recharged after discharging, rechargeable Batteries are rechargeable. Typical primary batteries include zinc and-carbon, alkaline and lithium batteries, used in portable devices, such as remote controls, watches, hearing aids or torches.

The chemical and design properties of batteries determine their performance parameters, such as output voltage, energy density, self-discharge and ability to operate at different temperatures. Batteries with high energy density and low environmental impact are particularly important in modern technologies, which is driving the development of alternative chemistries and systems for recovering and recycling used cells.
