BCI (brain-computer interface). brain-computer interface) is a technology that enables direct communication between the human brain and a computer system without the intermediation of classical output channels, such as muscles or nerves. Brain-computer interfaces are designed to read the electrical signals generated by neuronal activity and convert them into commands understandable for electronic devices. The primary source of signals used in BCIs is data recorded using electroencephalographic (EEG) methods, although more advanced applications also use invasive implantation techniques.
Solutions of this type are being developed primarily in a medical context, supporting people with severe motor limitations to regain communication functions and control of their environment. In addition to therapeutic applications, BCI is the subject of intensive research in areas such as neurotechnology, human-computer interaction, robotics and augmented reality. Central to this are methods of signal processing biological signals, algorithms pattern recognition and adaptive systems that learn individual user characteristics.
BCI technologies can operate in active mode, when the user consciously initiates specific patterns of brain activity, or in passive mode, by analysing the emotional or cognitive state without directly influencing the user's decisions. Regardless of the mode of operation, the successful operation of such systems requires high-precision signal detection and immunity to endogenous and exogenous interference.
