Bit error rate (BER) - definition

Bit Error Rate (BER, Bit Error Rate) is a coefficient that determines the quality of data transmission in digital systems. It expresses the ratio of the number of erroneously transmitted bits to the total number of bits received in a given time interval or within a given transmission sample. BER is a dimensionless value, most often represented as a decimal fraction or exponential number.

This parameter is crucial for assessing the reliability of telecommunications systems, Computer Networks, satellite transmission systems or radio equipment. A low BER value indicates high transmission quality and low interference, while higher values may indicate the presence of signal propagation problems, electromagnetic interference, hardware imperfections or errors in synchronisation.

BER is usually measured statistically by analysing reference data of known structure transmitted by the channel under test. The receiver compares it with the original by counting the number of discrepancies. In transmission systems, BER can be reduced through the use of methods correction coding, modulation of the noise-tolerant signal or adaptive techniques that adjust the transmission parameters to the channel conditions.

Accurate BER control is important not only for data integrity, but also for bandwidth efficiency and transmission delay. In applications requiring high reliability, such as aerospace, medical or space, the acceptable BER value can sometimes be extremely low, while in less critical applications it can be tolerated at a higher level, as long as the functionality of the system is not significantly affected.
