A Densimeter is a measuring instrument used to determine the density or specific gravity of liquids and sometimes semi-solids. Its operation is based on Archimedes' buoyancy principle, according to which the buoyancy force acting on an immersed body is equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces. In practice, the densimeter takes the form of a glass or plastic cylinder with a ballast at the bottom and a measuring scale at the top for direct reading of the density value.
During measurement, the densimeter is immersed in the liquid under test and fixed in an equilibrium position, the depth of immersion depending on the density of the liquid. The value is read at the level of the meniscus of the liquid on a calibrated scale. The scale of the densimeter can be graduated in different units: g/cm³, kg/m³, degrees Baumé, API, Brix or Plato - depending on the specific industry application.
Densimeters are widely used in the food industry (e.g. control of sugars in beverages), chemical, pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries, as well as in analytical laboratories. The precision of the measurement depends on the temperature of the liquid, which is why modern densimeters can be equipped with temperature compensation or work with reference thermometers.
Modern versions of densimeters, including oscillating digital densimeters, offer automatic measurement based on a change in the frequency of oscillation of the measuring tube filled with the sample under investigation. Such devices are characterised by high sensitivity, short measurement times and the possibility of recording and transmitting data to quality management systems or laboratory analysis.
