DOF (Degrees of Freedom) is a term used in mechanics, robotics, Automation and physical systems analysis to describe the number of independent parameters that uniquely describe an object's position and orientation in space. Each degree of freedom corresponds to the ability to perform independent translational or rotational motion in a specific axis of the coordinate system.
In the context of physical bodies, the number of degrees of freedom is related to the possibilities of translations in three spatial dimensions and rotations about an axis. For a material point moving in space, these can only be displacements, while for a rigid body there are additional rotations. In complex systems, such as multi-body mechanisms, industrial robots or dynamic systems, the DOF determines the complexity and extent of control over the movement of the individual members.
In robotics, the DOF defines the manipulation capabilities of a robot or working end and has a direct impact on its ability to achieve specific positions and orientations in the workspace. In dynamic control and modelling systems, the number of degrees of freedom determines the number of equations describing the motion of the system, which affects the complexity of analysis and design.
In engineering and computational science, such as finite element analysis (FEA) , the term DOF refers to the variables describing the displacements at the nodes of the computational grid. In statistics, on the other hand, the number of degrees of freedom is related to the number of independent values that can vary freely when estimating model parameters.
The meaning of DOF varies from domain to domain, but in all cases it refers to the number of independent variables describing a system, its movement or behaviour.
