Power electronics - definition

Energoelectronics is a branch of electrical engineering that deals with the conversion, control and handling of electrical energy using electronic, mainly semiconductor, components and circuits. Its aim is to efficiently transfer power between energy sources and consumers, while ensuring high efficiency, control precision and minimising losses. Power electronics integrates knowledge of electronics, electrical engineering, Automation and control theory, finding application in a wide range of power equipment and systems.

The basis for the operation of power electronics systems are switching elements such as IGBT transistors, MOSFETs, Thyristors or Power Diodes, which enable fast and selective control of current flow in high-power circuits. These elements typically operate in keying mode, which allows for a significant reduction in thermal losses compared to classical analogue control. This enables compact and efficient design of converters, inverters, rectifiers and switching power supplies.

Power electronics is used in drive systems, renewable energy sources, HVDC networks, energy storage, electric vehicles, railways, as well as industry and building automation, among others. It enables dynamic adjustment of voltage, current and frequency parameters to changing operating conditions, increasing energy efficiency and system reliability.

Today's power electronic systems are highly integrated with digital control systems, enabling advanced algorithms control, communication with superordinate systems and implementation of diagnostic functions. In addition, the development of broadband materials, such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN), allows the design of devices with higher efficiency, smaller dimensions and greater resistance to extreme conditions, which significantly expands the practical application of power electronics.
