GPIB (General Purpose Interface Bus) - definition

GPIB (General Purpose Interface Bus), also known as IEEE-488, is a parallel communication bus developed in the 1960s by Hewlett-Packard for measurement automation and control applications in Laboratory instruments. The standard was later formalised by the IEEE as IEEE-488 and further developed into IEEE-488.1 and IEEE-488.2, extending the specification and improving interoperability.

GPIB allows multiple measurement devices, such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators or Spectrum Analyzers, to be connected to a control computer or to each other over a single communication bus. The system can support up to 15 devices, including one master (controller) and up to 14 slaves, allowing bi-directional communication and software-based control. Data transfer is carried out in parallel over an 8-bit data bus with additional control lines, allowing relatively fast transfer compared to other interfaces of the time.

GPIB has the advantage of its deterministic structure and low susceptibility to interference, making it particularly suitable for laboratory and industrial environments where stability and reliability are key. Despite the limitations in cable length and transmission speed compared to newer Interfaces (e.g. USB, Ethernet), GPIB is still used in applications requiring compatibility with older devices and where there is a developed infrastructure based on this standard.

GPIB communication is managed through a set of commands and protocols that define how transmissions are initiated, how addresses are assigned to devices and synchronisation of data flows. This interface has been a key element in the development of measurement automation and is the foundation of many modern test systems.
