Hadron - definition

The Hadron is a complex particle subject to the strong interaction - one of the four fundamental forces in physics. It is made up of quarks that are permanently bound by gluons according to the principles of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Hadrons are divided into two main groups: baryons, consisting of three quarks (e.g. protons and neutrons), and mesons, which are quark-antiquark systems. Unlike elementary particles, hadrons have an internal structure and are susceptible to decay under appropriate energy conditions.

From the point of view of particle physics, hadrons play a fundamental role in the description of nuclear matter. Protons and neutrons, as baryons, form atomic nuclei, which are the basis for the existence of visible matter. Although mesons are unstable and usually occur as products of high-energy processes, their study provides valuable information about the nuclear force and quark dynamics.

The properties of hadrons, such as mass, electric charge, spin or lifetime, result from the configuration of quarks and their interactions. Hadrons cannot exist in isolation as single quarks - they always form colour-neutral systems according to the confajnment principle. This distinguishes them from leptons, which are not subject to strong interactions.

Modern experimental physics, including experiments conducted at particle accelerators, such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), focuses on analysing reactions involving hadrons, searching for new types of hadrons and testing theoretical models describing the structure of matter at the subatomic level. This research allows a better understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the stability of atomic nuclei and the evolution of the Universe.
