Idempotence - definition
Idempotency is a mathematical and computer science concept describing the property of an operation whose repeated application produces the same result as performing it once. Formally, for a binary operation f, operating on a set X, the function is idempotent if, for each element x in the set, the equality holds: f(x, x) = f(x). In the context of unary functions, this condition simplifies to the form f(f(x)) = f(x), which means that applying the function to its own result does not change the result.
In computer science, idempotency plays a fundamental role in the design of distributed systems, network protocols, databases and web services. For example, an HTTP PUT request is idempotent because repeatedly sending the same operation to the server does not change the state of the resource beyond the first execution - thus providing repeat resistance in the event of a network failure.
In algebraic abstract structures such as semigroups, monoids or Boolean algebras, idempotency serves as a classification criterion for logical operations (e.g. conjunction, alternative) and projective functions. In functional programming and mathematical logic, the concept also refers to constructions that ensure deterministic and predictable operation without side effects. In engineering practice, idempotency promotes the design of fault-tolerant, easily testable and reconfigurable systems.
