Multimeter - definition
The Multimeter is a universal Measuring Tools used in electronics, electrical engineering and service engineering for the precise measurement of basic electrical quantities such as voltage, current and resistance. Modern multimeters combine the functionalities of several classic measuring instruments in one compact enclosure, making them indispensable in the diagnosis, maintenance and design of electrical and electronic systems.
Analog Multimeters come in analogue versions, where the result is read out with a tilt indicator, and Digital Multimeters (DMM, Digital Multimeter), which offer a display of values on LCD screens with high resolution and often additional functions such as automatic range setting, frequency, capacitance, temperature, Diodes test or circuit continuity check.
The multimeter's design includes measurement inputs, a function switch circuit, a calibration system and a signal processing path, enabling safe and precise measurements in both low-voltage electronic circuits and power installations. High-performance industrial multimeters also provide advanced surge protection, high resistance to electromagnetic interference and certification to safety standards (e.g. IEC 61010).
Key parameters for multimeter quality are measurement accuracy, indication resolution, measurement ranges and sampling rate . In professional applications such as research laboratories or the electrical engineering industry, multimeters are often integrated into Data Acquisition Systems or computer-controlled, enabling the automation of measurement processes and the archiving of results. In the context of modern technological solutions, it is increasingly common to find multimeters with wireless interfaces, allowing remote monitoring of electrical parameters in real time.
