Beater (knypel) - definition

A beater, also known as a knuckle, is a hand tool used in assembly, workshop and construction operations whose main function is to transmit a controlled percussive force to a workpiece or other tool, such as chisel, chisel or drift. The design of a beater usually includes a solid body in the form of a cylinder or block with rounded edges, made of a deformation-resistant material, often hardwood, plastic, technical rubber, brass or steel, depending on the purpose and type of work.

Beaters are used wherever precise control of impact force is required while minimising the risk of damage to the surface of the workpieces. In precision assembly techniques, especially when working with parts that are prone to distortion, beaters made from soft plastics or wood allow force to be applied without the risk of scratching or deforming the material. Heavy engineering applications, on the other hand, use steel or brass beaters that can carry significant dynamic loads while maintaining shape stability.

In metalworking, carpentry, stonemasonry and renovation operations, the beater acts as an auxiliary tool to properly align, fit or separate components. The ergonomic shape and appropriate weight of the beater help to reduce operator fatigue and increase precision. Specialised industrial applications also use anti-spark beaters made of non-magnetic and non-sparking materials for use in explosive environments.
