Stop current is the minimum, constant current flowing through an active component or an entire Instrumentation system in a non-signal processing state, i.e. under resting conditions. It most commonly refers to amplifiers, transistors, Integrated circuits and other devices operating in linear mode or as a signal buffer. It is a parameter that determines the operating point of a system in the absence of an input signal and is crucial to its stability, linearity and energy efficiency.
For Bipolar transistors, the resting current usually refers to the collector current in the absence of signal modulation, while in field-effect transistors it refers to the drain current at a fixed gate voltage. For analogue amplifiers, a suitably selected resting current prevents non-linear distortion and enables the frequency response to be maintained over the full operating range. Its value results from the circuit design and the selection of the elements that establish the operating point - such as polarising resistors, current sources or automatic control circuits.
In the context of digital circuits or microcontrollers, idle current can refer to the current drawn by the power supply in the idle state, i.e. when the device is not performing logic operations but remains active. In low-power designs, minimising this parameter is crucial to increase battery life and reduce thermal losses.
From the point of view of reliability and thermal emissions, too high an idle current leads to unnecessary heating of components, which can shorten their lifespan and affect performance stability. Therefore, the selection of the optimum resting current is a compromise between signal processing quality and energy efficiency, especially in the design of audio amplifiers, analogue circuits and portable devices.
