Analogue switch - definition

Analogue switch is an electronic component that allows electronically controlled redirection of analogue signals between different paths in a circuit. Its purpose is to selectively combine one or more signal lines with the lowest possible distortion and loss of signal quality. In contrast to classic mechanical switches, analogue versions are realised using semiconductor technology, which allows fast and silent switching and integration into integrated circuits.

The operation of analogue switches is based on the use of MOSFET transistors, which switch from the conduction state to the cut-off state depending on the control voltage. This makes it possible to smoothly control the flow of signals of any waveform - voltage or current - within an acceptable bandwidth and level. Important parameters for switches of this type are resistance in the ON state, switching time, leakage, linearity and signal voltage range.

Analogue switches are widely used in audio circuits, measurement devices, video paths, Data Acquisition Systems and in industrial applications where dynamic control of the signal path is required without its conversion to digital form. Their design allows switching of both single channels and multi-channel arrays, increasing system flexibility. Advanced applications use low-noise, high-speed and high-precision switches to ensure minimal interference with the parameters of the processed signal.
