Operational amplifiers is a universal, high-power electronic component, usually implemented as an integrated circuit, designed to amplify the voltage difference between two inputs: non-inverting and inverting. Its operation is based on the principle of feedback, which allows precise control of the gain and the shape of the processed signal. Thanks to its versatility, the operational amplifier is a basic functional block in analogue electronic circuits, such as filters, integrators, differentiators, comparators, amplifiers or analogue-to-digital converters-digital converters.
The ideal operational amplifier is characterised by infinite open-circuit voltage gain, infinite input impedance and zero output impedance, which means, that it does not load the signal source and can drive any load without signal loss. In practice, these parameters are physically limited, but modern designs provide very high performance in a wide range of applications.
Operational amplifiers are designed to operate in linear and non-linear configurations. In linear configurations, they implement.inter alia. precise amplification of analogue signals, voltage summing, filtering and correction. In non-linear applications, they can act as threshold detectors, switches or waveform generators. Wide frequency range, low noise, fast impulse response and the ability to work with very small signals make them indispensable in measurement systems, data acquisition and audio devices.
Structurally, an operational amplifier contains internal input stages for, amplifying and output stages, usually based on Bipolar transistors or MOSFETs-ach, and its operation depends on external passive components, which define the circuit function. Standard models, such as the LM741, TL081 or modern op-rail type op amps-are-rail, are widely used in education, research and electronics industry.
