Quartz clock is a device that measures the passage of time, based on a resonator made of quartz crystal, utilizing the piezoelectric effect. When voltage is applied to a properly cut crystal, mechanical vibrations with a very stable and repeatable frequency are generated. This frequency is then electronically processed to generate pulses corresponding to seconds, minutes, and hours, and also—for digital applications—to clock microprocessor circuits.
Quartz used in clocks exhibits a natural ability to oscillate within a specific frequency range, most commonly 32,768 Hz, which corresponds to a power of two and simplifies frequency division in binary circuits. The quartz oscillator, being the core of the clock, provides high precision in time measurement with minimal influence from external factors such as temperature or supply voltage. This stability is what makes quartz clocks characterized by deviations of a few seconds per month, which is highly accurate for consumer and industrial applications.
Quartz clocks can be analog, where an electric pulse controls a stepper motor driving the hands, or digital, where pulses are calculated by a logic circuit and displayed on a liquid crystal or diode screen. This technology is used in wristwatches, electronic devices, computers, automation systems, and real-time clock (RTC) applications where process synchronization with precise time reference is required.
Despite the development of more advanced synchronization technologies, such as atomic clocks or GPS systems, quartz clocks remain widely used due to their low cost, simplicity of construction, reliability, and sufficient accuracy for most everyday and industrial applications.
