Gear is a mechanical component with a linear or sometimes curved geometry, equipped on its surface with regularly spaced teeth, which works with a gear wheel to convert rotary motion into linear motion or vice versa. In mechanical systems, gears play a key role in the precise transmission of force and torque, enabling the realisation of rectilinear movements with high accuracy and a large range of forces.
Geometrical parameters of a rack, such as the modulus, number and profile of teeth, are designed in accordance with engineering standards to ensure compatibility with the gear wheel and the smooth and uniform running of the mechanism. Gears are usually manufactured from high-strength materials, such as alloy steel, stainless steel or engineering plastics, depending on the load requirements, resistance to abrasion and corrosion.
In technical applications, gears are used in drive mechanisms, control systems, transport and positioning systems and measuring equipment. For example, vehicle steering systems use rack and pinion gears, which provide a linear response to the rotary movement of the steering wheel, increasing steering precision.
The analysis of rack and pinion operation includes issues related to frictional forces friction, dynamic loads, tooth surface wear and power transmission efficiency. Modern designs use advanced heat treatment methods, such as surface hardening or nitriding, to increase the service life of the gears and to reduce susceptibility to fatigue under long-term loading.
Precise manufacture and correct lubrication of the gears and mating gears are key to minimising energy losses, reducing noise and extending the service life of the mechanism in various industries, including in robotics, automotive, industrial automation and railways.
