The TME offer includes varistors with differing maximum operating voltages, electric currents and dimensions. As a result, customers can choose solutions suited to needs of their project, regardless of its size. Each varistor has appropriate markings that will facilitate the selection. It should be remembered that the highest permanent tension of the product should be higher than the one supplied to it continuously.

Varistors - what they are and what they are made of?

A varistoris an electronic component whose resistance varies depending on electrical tension. In the case of smaller voltages, resistance value will be very high, however, after exceeding a certain threshold level, it rapidly falls down (exponential decay). Varistors are produced using zinc oxide as a conductor mixed with oxides of various metals (often bismuth) which are characterised by much higher resistance. When a higher voltage appears, the varistor's structure is laid on the connectors so that the electric current finds the outlet.

What applications does the varistor have?

The main purpose of these products is to protect devices against overvoltages. When for some reason there is a sudden increase in the voltage of a receiver, resistance of a varistor drops. The energy of this unforeseen impulse will be intercepted and instead of destroying the device, the fuse will be turned off or blown. Thanks to this, you can avoid an unexpected failure. Varistors can also be used as surge arresters, in this case, a drop in their resistance makes it possible to safely discharge the electric current to the ground. Smaller varistors are commonly used as surge protectors in electronic devices connected to electric energy sources and telephone lines. Large models are used as protection for transformers and high-voltage lines as well as in heavy industry.
