An Electromagnet is a device that generates a magnetic field in a controlled manner, through the flow of an electric current through a winding wound on a ferromagnetic core. Unlike permanent magnets, the magnetic field of an electromagnet exists only during the flow of current and its value and direction can be easily adjusted, making it a component widely used in mechanical, electrical and automation systems.
The principle of solenoids is described by Ampère's law and Faraday's law of induction. The current flowing through the coils of the conductor creates a magnetic field that is enhanced by the presence of a core of high magnetic permeability, usually made of mild steel. This core concentrates the lines of the field, increasing its intensity and allowing it to interact effectively with other circuit components such as jumpers, anchors or contacts.
Solenoids are used in relays, contactors, solenoid valves, lifting devices, magnetic transport systems and electric motors and generators, among others. In industrial applications, high-power solenoids are often used to manipulate heavy objects made of ferromagnetic materials. In precision engineering, on the other hand, miniature solenoids are used to control small movements or switch signals.
Solenoids' operating parameters, such as the attractive force, response time, stroke range or energy efficiency, depend on the number of coils, the current, the properties of the core and the geometry of the magnetic system. The design of solenoids requires consideration of phenomena such as magnetic saturation, hysteresis, thermal losses and inductance, which is crucial for their reliability and performance under dynamic conditions.
