Emulator - definition

An Emulator is a computer device or program that enables the emulation of the operation of another hardware or software system in a way that allows software intended for the original platform to run on a different architecture or in a different environment. The purpose of emulation is to faithfully replicate the functions, Interfaces and behaviour of the source system so that programs or devices that interact with it operate as originally intended, without its physical presence.

In electronics and computing, emulators are used, among other things, for testing and debugging embedded software, recreating the operation of historical computer platforms, running mobile applications on personal computers or running legacy operating systems. Their operation is based on modelling key components of the original system, such as processors, memory, buses, peripherals and input/output interfaces, with the level of detail depending on the purpose of the emulation - from low-level mapping of machine cycles to functional simulations of behaviour.

Emulators differ from simulators in that they aim for binary compatibility with the original environment, allowing existing machine code to run directly. This makes them useful for analysing the behaviour of systems under near real-world conditions, e.g. for fault diagnosis in digital circuits or reverse engineering. There are both software solutions, running as utility applications, and hardware solutions, used in the design and manufacturing process of electronic systems.

Modern emulators are often combined with Tools for tracking the status of registers, memory and signal waveforms, making them an indispensable part of development environments. Due to the increasing complexity of modern digital systems, emulation is a key technique in prototyping, testing and ensuring cross-platform compatibility.
