EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) - definition

EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) is a non-volatile semiconductor memory whose contents can be repeatedly written to and erased, unlike the classic ROM. Designed to permanently store data that may change during the development or servicing phase of a device, the EPROM represents an important stage in the development of digital memory technology.

The structure of the EPROM memory cell is based on Transistors with a so-called. floating-gate, which is an isolated floating gate capable of storing an electrical charge. Data is written by injecting electrons into this gate using the tunneling method or the avalanche effect phenomenon. The presence or absence of charge in the gate modifies the conductive properties of the transistor, which corresponds to the stored logic states.

Erasing of the contents of the EPROM is carried out using ultraviolet radiation, which removes the accumulated charge from the floating gates, returning the cells to an unsaved state. For this reason, EPROM chips are equipped with a transparent quartz window that allows exposure to the inside of the silicon structure. The erasure process requires precise exposure and is relatively time-consuming, which limits its practicality compared to newer memory types.

Because of its durability and re-programmability, the EPROM has been widely used in embedded systems, test equipment, industrial controllers and circuits requiring unpowered data retention. However, over time it has been superseded by EEPROM and Flash memories, which offer an easier and faster way to erase and write data without the need for UV light.

Despite technological limitations, EPROMs have played an important role in the development of microelectronics and are still used today in specific applications where reliability and resistance to accidental data overwriting are important.
