Magnetostatics - definition

Magnetostatics is the branch of electromagnetism concerned with the study of magnetic fields produced by time-fixed, stationary electric currents. Unlike electrodynamics, where time-varying electromagnetic phenomena are analysed, magnetostatics assumes that the currents are constant and the magnetic field does not change over time, which simplifies mathematical descriptions and allows the use of Maxwell's static equations.

Within magnetostatics, the key is Biot-Savart's law, which allows the calculation of the magnetic induction vector at a given point in space as the result of integrating the effect of elementary currents. The second fundamental tool of analysis is Ampère's law, which relates the circulation of the magnetic field vector around a closed loop to the current flowing through its interior. In engineering applications, magnetostatics enables the modelling and design of structures where magnetic field distributions under steady-state conditions are important.

Magnetostatic phenomena are found, among others, in the magnetic circuits of transformers, motors, Coils and Solenoids, as well as in ferromagnetic materials, where the description of magnetic domains and their interactions can be considered in static terms. Numerical methods, such as the finite element method (FEM), are used in computational engineering to analyse complex three-dimensional systems, taking into account material nonlinearities and boundary conditions.

Magnetostatics does not take into account electromagnetic radiation or electromotive induction, making the model particularly useful in situations where the temporal variation of the field is negligible. Static magnetic field analysis also plays an important role in engineering diagnostics, sensor design and electromagnetic protection.
