Voltage step-down converter (buck converter) - definition

*A buck converter is a power electronic device whose function is to convert an input voltage to a lower output voltage, while maintaining a continuous energy flow. In a technical context, the term most commonly refers to what is known as a buck* DC-DC converter, used to supply power to electronic circuits requiring voltages lower than those available from the source.

The operation of a step-down converter is based on the principle of fast switching of the power transistor and energy storage and filtering by means of Inductive and Capacitive Components. The key process here is pulse width modulation (PWM), which regulates the average value of the output voltage depending on the ratio of the switching element's ON time to OFF time. This allows precise control of the output voltage with high energy efficiency.

Depending on the technology, converters of this type can operate in continuous or discontinuous mode, which affects the dynamic characteristics and the level of electromagnetic interference. Downconverters are commonly used in switching power supplies, battery systems, automotive and IoT devices, where efficiency, compact size and voltage stability are crucial.

In industrial applications, step-down converters can also appear as components of larger power electronics systems, integrating protection, diagnostic and communication functions. Their design requires consideration of parameters such as voltage range, load current, efficiency, allowable ripple and electromagnetic compatibility with other system components.
