BIBO stability - definition

BIBO stability (Bounded Input, Bounded Output) is a concept from dynamical systems and control theory that defines the condition in which any bounded input signal generates a bounded output response. This means that if the input signal does not exceed a certain maximum (it is bounded), then also the output signal of the system cannot reach infinite or uncontrolled values.

The concept of BIBO is one of the key criteria for evaluating the stability of linear and non-linear systems, both in the continuous and discrete time domain. For linear time-invariant (LTI) systems, BIBO stability can be mathematically related to the impulse characteristic - a system is stable in the BIBO sense if the sum of the absolute values of the impulse characteristic is finite (for discrete systems) or if the integral of its modulus is finite (for continuous systems). For systems described by a transmittance, a necessary condition is that all poles lie in the left half-plane of the complex (for continuous systems) or inside the unit circle (for discrete systems).

BIBO stability is important in the design and analysis of control systems, digital filters, amplifiers and control systems where it is undesirable for the system to be excited or for unlimited responses to appear despite limited stimuli. Unlike other types of stability, such as asymptotic or Lyapunov stability, BIBO stability focuses solely on the behaviour of the input-output relationship, without analysing the internal state trajectory of the system. For this reason, it is particularly useful in applications where only external signals are observed, without access to the full state model.

Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation. The catalog includes over 1,500,000 products from 1,300 leading manufacturers. TME’s modern logistics centers in Łódź and Rzgów (Poland), with a combined area of over 40,000 m², ship nearly 6,000 packages daily to customers in more than 150 countries.

TME also invests in the development of knowledge and skills of young engineers and electronics enthusiasts through the TME Education project, and supports the tech community by organizing the TechMasterEvent series, promoting innovation and experience exchange.
