LED displays with UART interface

Date of publication: 05-07-2022 🕒 3 min read

The TME offer now includes LED displays equipped with a built-in UART interface manufactured by Lumex. The modules are available in both 7-segment LED dot-matrix variants.

The UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter) interface is one of the most popular methods of communication between electronic devices in electronic systems, in particular the advanced ones. This serial interface for bidirectional communication requires only 4 lines: TX, RX and two power wires. This results in a number of advantages: one of the most important of these is the simplicity of design of both the PCB and the entire device. Unlike classic LED displays, only 4 lines are required for Lumex displays. What's more, the LED display can be easily connected to the main PCB using wires and installed anywhere on the device body – you can now use a 4-wire connecting cable, instead of multi-wire, inflexible ribbons whose connectors take up a large area of the PCB.

Another advantage is that you can control the display using high-level programming languages such as Python. They are also perfect for working with ESP32, ESP8266, Arduino or Raspberry Pi. In each of these environments, you can find libraries and examples to easily and quickly implement the display in a personal project, prototype or device that is being prepared for manufacturing.
