Contact with air and metallic parts results in the appearance of a white or bluish deposit, which is a sign of corrosion.

If you notice corrosion in a device, first of all unplug the device and remove the Batteries. Then wear protective gloves - even homemade latex or nitrile gloves - to avoid contact with the electrolyte. To neutralise the deposits, it is best to use a solution of vinegar or lemon juice, which reacts with alkaline electrolyte residues, dissolving them. It is sufficient to gently wipe the affected areas with a cotton bud or a cloth soaked in the solution. After cleaning, dry the area and check the following, that there is no permanent damage to the tracks, contacts or plastic parts. If the metal contacts are more deeply damaged, they may need to be sanded or even replaced.
