Memory Cards fail most often due to wear and tear of flash memory cells, logical errors, mechanical damage or electrical disturbances. Any of these factors can lead to data loss, performance degradation or complete media immobilisation.
Memory Cards SD and microSD are based on NAND flash memory, which has a limited number of write and erase cycles. Each memory cell can only be written to and erased a certain number of times, after which it loses its ability to store data. This phenomenon, known as wear-out, is inevitable and progresses faster in low-quality or heavily used cards, e.g. in car recorders, surveillance cameras or drones. Symptoms of wear-out include slower writing, errors occurring, loss of files or the card going into read-only mode.
The most common problems include file system errors, which occur as a result of improper disconnection of the card from the device, interrupted writing, power surges or viruses. Such damage leads to a situation where the card is visible but inaccessible, reports errors or requires formatting. Logical failures do not yet mean the loss of the media itself. They can often be repaired using diagnostic tools such as chkdsk (Windows command), SD Formatter or partition repair software.
Memory Cards contain a controller, which is a microprocessor responsible for managing writing, reading and communication with the device. Controller failure can result in a sudden failure to detect the card, unstable operation or complete media lock-up. Often such damage is irreversible and requires the intervention of a service that recovers data directly from the NAND. An additional risk is surges and voltage spikes, which can damage the electronics on the card, especially when connected to faulty USB readers, cheap adapters or unstable Power Supplies.
Broken casing, cracked Laminates, scratches or corrosion of contacts are typical mechanical failures. These particularly affect microSD cards, which are more susceptible to physical strain due to their small size. Any bending, flexing or soiling can damage the data line or voltage, preventing the card from continuing to function. Memory Cards, despite their simplicity, are complex electronic devices. Their durability depends on both the quality of manufacture and the way they are used.
