No, not all microSD cards work the same. They differ not only in capacity, but also in standard, file system, speed and compatibility with devices. Overlooking these differences can lead to reading errors, data loss or complete invisibility of the card in the device.
Although all microSD cards have the same shape and connector, they are divided into four main standards that differ in capacity range and logical structure: -microSD - up to 2GB, FAT16 file system, -microSDHC (High Capacity) - from 4 to 32GB, FAT32 file system, -microSDXC (eXtended Capacity) - from 64GB to 2TB, exFAT file system, -microSDUC (Ultra Capacity) - from 2TB to 128TB, also exFAT. Each of these standards has different hardware requirements. A microSDHC compatible device may not support microSDXC, even though the card physically fits in the slot. This is mainly due to the lack of exFAT support or the firmware limitations of the hardware in question.
Newer generation cards are usually backward compatible only if the device supports them at the system level. For example, a microSDXC card inserted into an older camera that does not recognise exFAT will not be detected or will force formatting to FAT32, which may fail if the card is more than 32GB. In practice, this means that you cannot assume that every microSD will work in every device, even though it physically fits in the slot. In addition, the manufacturer may restrict interoperability to only certain types of cards, e.g. in car recorders or drones.
In addition to capacity and file system, microSD cards differ in write speed classes and data transfer interface. Cards with designations such as UHS-I, UHS-II, V30, A2 have completely different performance characteristics. If a device does not support a particular standard, the card will work, but with a limited speed, which can lead e.g. to interruptions in video recording or slower start-up of applications. The selection of a microSD card should take into account not only your requirements, but above all the specifications of the device in which the card will be used.
