What displays does the Raspberry Pi support?

Others Raspberry Pi supports a variety of display types - from standard HDMI monitors to specialised touchscreens with MIPI DSI interfaces. With the Raspberry Pi 5, these capabilities have been greatly expanded.

HDMI Connectors - the main method of displaying video

The most intuitive way to connect a screen to the Raspberry Pi is via HDMI connectors. Raspberry Pi 4 and 5 models use two micro-HDMI ports, allowing two monitors to be connected simultaneously. Both ports support a video signal with a resolution of up to 4K at 60 Hz, allowing comfortable work in a graphics environment or for multimedia applications. It is worth bearing in mind that a suitable HDMI 2.0 cable and a monitor supporting 4K resolution are required to achieve this performance.

MIPI interface - Displays and cameras in a compact form factor

The second important type of connector is MIPI DSI (Display Serial Interface) ports. These are used to connect dedicated displays, usually touchscreen displays, which are used in embedded projects, home automation or Raspberry Pi-based mobile devices. The Raspberry Pi 5 uses two four-track MIPI Connectors, which can act as DSI (for displays) or CSI (for cameras). Compared to previous models (e.g. Pi 4), which only had one 2-track connector for DSI and CSI, this is a significant improvement - as it allows two Displays or two cameras to be connected at the same time. MIPI DSI screens are very thin, energy-efficient and suitable for applications requiring low weight and built-in touch functionality. They are often used, e.g. in the design of portable gaming consoles, HMIs (Human-Machine Interface) or digital control panels.

Working without a display - headless mode

The Raspberry Pi can also operate without any connected screen. Such a mode is called headless and is often used in server systems, Automation, measurement stations or IoT projects. In this case, the user connects to the device remotely - via the network - using the protocols SSH (for command line) or VNC (for graphical desktop). This allows full control of the system without the need for a physical monitor, which is important e.g. when installing the device in hard-to-reach places.

Display compatibility and power supply

When selecting Displays for the Raspberry Pi, attention should be paid not only to the type of connector, but also to voltage compatibility and power supply. Most HDMI displays are powered separately, via USB or an external power supply, while MIPI DSI displays can use the Raspberry Pi's power bus directly - requiring fine-tuning of voltages and controllers. Raspberry Pi OS includes support for official Raspberry Pi screens, making configuration and installation significantly easier. For third-party screens, you may need to manually enter the relevant parameters in the system configuration files or install additional drivers.
